Meet the 2012-2013 Executive Board!

 Welcome Back!

(Mansfield ASTA chapter receiving our Most Improved Student Chapter award at the National Conference)

After such a great last year, our chapter is very excited to be kicking off the 2012-2013 school year!  We have already had several meetings and an exciting year is in the works.  Over the next couple Sundays starting at 5pm, ASTA will be showing the Ring Cycle in Butler room 102.  Everybody is invited and refreshments will be provided!

Now for our 2012-2013 Executive Board:

 President: Brittany Hendler

Brittany is a Senior Music Education major whose primary instrument is violin. She is also the Assistant Director of the String Project at Mansfield University and a sister of Sigma Alpha Iota.  Brittany also manages the ASTA Student Chapter Networking page on Facebook which you can find here.

Vice President: Thomas Grisanti

Thomas (Tom) Grisanti is a Junior Music Education major whose primary instrument is violin.  He is also the Director of the String Project at Mansfield University.  Tom has recently picked up a Philosophy minor and is starting a Philosophy club on campus.

Secretary: Erin Kearney

Erin Kearney is a Junior Music major whose primary instrument is violin.  When she is not soloing with our university's string orchestra (pictured above), you can find her Irish dancing or making beautiful ASTA posters (fun fact: she's our chapter's PR chair as well!).

Treasurer: Caroline Dolan

Caroline Dolan is a sophomore Music Education major whose primary instrument is violin.  She is also the treasurer of the String Project at Mansfield University.  Caroline is also a bass secondary and heads up our chapter's fundraising committee.

Now that you know our executive board a little better, stay tuned for more Member of The Week posts so you can get to know all of our chapter's members.  Have a great rest of your week and hopefully we'll see YOU at the Ring Cycle viewing.

When You Wish Upon A Star!

Read below about one of our member's favorite musical experience!

My name is Erin Kearney and I am a sophomore music major. I have been playing violin for about ten years and have been in my high school’s advanced strings, Marywood University String Project, Marywood University’s orchestra and District 9 Orchestra before coming here. One experience from Scranton High School’s advanced strings was in my sophomore year of high school we were invited to perform in Disneyworld to be part of Disney’s Magic Music Days. Not many schools in my area get invited to go down to perform so it was great to show people outside of my area how we perform. For this trip, my parents, aunt, aunt and uncle came with us. On the day we were performing in Magic Kingdom, my cousins that live down in Florida came up to see our concert. The music was not incredibly hard, but we performed themes from “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”, “The Star-Spangled Banner”(which had to be memorized), and “Palladio” as well as a few others. This experience is just great to say that not many people have the opportunity to perform in Disney World.

Relay For Life!

On April 13th, our chapter will be participating in the Mansfield University Relay for Life.  If you have never heard of Relay for Life, it is an event where "each team camps out over night and takes turns walking around the track to raise awareness and money to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays".

The theme for this year is "When You Wish Upon A Cure" (a play off Disney!) and we picked Pirates of the Caribbean as the Disney movie we will be representing.  Stay tuned for more posts about our Relay experience and fundraisers we will be doing.  If you'd like to find out more about relay, or donate to our team, just click the links below :)

4 Days Until The National Conference!

In just four short days, five members of our student chapter will be flying down to Atlanta, GA for the ASTA national conference.  We are honored to be accepting the national award for the Most Improved Student Chapter!  Today, I downloaded the program book for the conference and was REALLY excited to see the little blurb talking about the student networking night and EVEN MORE EXCITED when I read further down and saw that our chapter was mentioned!

I can't even wait to meet other students and find out what they have been at their universities.  I wish that we could bring down our whole chapter for the conference, as well as everybody who was involved in the organization from 2010-2011 (that's the school year we won the award for!).  Hopefully (fingers crossed) we'll be able to bring many more people next year since Providence is much closer to Mansfield than Atlanta.
